Two dead, six injured in drive-by shooting at Curacao airport

Two people were killed and six wounded in a drive by shooting late Tuesday at Curacao's international airport in the capital of Willemstad. The shooting occurred outside the arrivals area.

Curacao which a small island of roughly 150,000 people lies about 40 miles off the Venezuela coast.

Curacao is known for its diving opportunities, its historic city center that is a U.N. World Heritage site, and as an offshore banking center. It is also a transshipment point for narcotics from South America bound for the U.S. and Europe.

Last year a local influential social worker and was host of a radio show Helmin Wiels was assassinated on a beach while he socialized and sipped a beer. That assassination remains unsolved.

Curacao's government described the airport shooting as an isolated incident involving local residents and noted that no tourists were shot.
