According to a new study published by the British Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) think tank, retirement has a detrimental impact on peoples mental and physical health.
The study suggests people should work longer for health and economic reasons, because retirement results in a "drastic decline in health" over the medium and long term.
Working longer not only helps economically but it helps people live healthier lives.
The study found that retirement increases the chances of suffering from clinical depression by 40%, while you are 60% more likely to suffer from a physical health condition.
The effect is the same for both men and women with the chances of becoming ill increaing with the leangth of time one is in retirement.
