5. Nekoyan (Grenada)
Anyone who hears Nekoyan in concert will be impressed by her versatile and commanding voice. She has the kind of voice that stirs emotions every time she takes the stage.
Nekoyan has been involved in music for the last seven years. She started off singing R&B and Reggae with BlackMajik and Adigun and never thought that she would become so involved in soca.
In 2009, Nekoyan released her first soca track with her band Frontpage titled "Yuh Rags". Although she did not make the finals of the National Soca Monarch competition that year, the song got her a nomination for Best New Female Soca Artiste at the 2010 International Soca Music Awards.
Nekoyan released her second soca single “Keep It Moving” in 2010, which got her to the finals of the National Soca Monarch competition and her first performance outside of Grenada at the New York Labor Day celebrations.
Since 2010, Nekoyan has been a regular finalist in the National Soca Monarch finals, except in 2012 where her finished in the semi-final stage of the competition. To date, Nekoyan has been the most frequent female finalist in the National Soca Monarch competition.
In 2012, she began pursuing her Bachelor’s degree at the University of the West Indies and so had to lessen on her involvement in music.
However, her musical career wont be on hold for long, as she is planning to return in 2015.
Nekoyan has collaborated with artistes like Skinny Fabulous, Keisha and Lizter, and has worked with producers like Precision, Homebase, Wetty Beatz, Xpert and Aquarion among others.
