The Mighty Sparrow, regarded as the greatest calypsonian ever, has been released from a Queens, New York hospital a month after he was admitted, in a coma, due to a stroke.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago newsday.co.tt website, citing a press release sent to them by Alvin Daniell on behalf of Francisco’s wife Margaret, the Grenada born 78-year-old Sparrow, real name Dr.Slinger Francisco, is doing well while convalescing at a special therapy facility.
After being hospitalized over a month ago Sparrow was out of a coma and responsive by September 16, and was recently reported to have regained his speech and to made significant progress.
Sparrow's health had deteriorated in recent years. He had surgery in 2010 to treat a hernia, and he has also been hospitalized more than once for complications caused by diabetes.
There has been a lot of speculation about Sparrow's health and indeed his life since he became seriously ill in September, with some people claiming he had attempted suicide and some claiming he had died.
