Panama ends land sale after protests and three deaths

After three three people were killed in popular protests against Panama's President Ricardo Martinelli's plan to sell state-owned lands in the duty-free zone of Colon, Martinellii who is away on a trip to Japan during the protests says he will repeal the sale. Instead, commercial rents in the area will be increased and the money reinvested in the region as the protesters have demanded.

The sale faced broad opposition by trade unions, the Colon Chamber of Commerce, civil society groups, and the residents of Colon.
