The Skiff Armada Modular System combines a pair of our Skiff micro monitors with one or two NSMT EXP active subwoofers, one of the fastest and best small subwoofers (We recommend two EXP subwoofer for best performance). You end up with a system that is greater than the sum of its parts. This system provides the utmost flexibility in fine-tuning the loudspeaker's interaction with the room to deliver an ultimate listening experience. The Skiff Armada System will outclass most minimonitor subwoofer systems and even some highly regard monitor-pedestal bass systems.
While a good floorstanding loudspeaker offers the utmost efficiency in packaging, a good sub-sat system with two active subwoofer offers the utmost flexibility in tweaking the system's performance to maximize its performance relative to room acoustics. Monitor-pedestal bass systems such as the Wilson Watt Puppy offer added performance because they reduce interference of the bass into the higher frequencies by using two separate enclosures. However sub-sat systems with one or two active subwoofers like the Skiff Armada offers the best performance because the bass enclosure is completely separated from the enclosure producing the higher frequencies. Add a pair of NSMT Sandbag stands and you can project the sound of the Skiffs at the desired height. Moreover, with two active subwoofers, each subwoofer can be relocated in the room independent of the Skiffs to get the best bass response and to defeat room resonances that naturally occur. This is because the crossover and volume control of each subwoofer can be adjusted to match the output of the Skiffs and the subwoofer's bass output can be brought into absolute phase alignment with the subwoofer's continuous phase switch and/or by repositioning the subwoofer .
Interestingly, the Skiff Armada System improves the Skiffs outstanding performance. This is because, with the EXPs in the system, the Skiffs will be played at lower volume since there is no psycoacoustical need to try to get the Skiffs to pressurize the room. Moreover, because the linear response of the EXPs allows it to integrate extremely well and to provide bass reinforcement as opposed to bass replacement, the crossover point can be set high to provide bass reinforcement in the upper bass, even above 200Hz, which makes the Skiff-EXP combination sound fuller, like much larger loudspeaker systems.
Here is what a reviewer said about a system consisting of a single EXP sub and a pair of NSMT Model 5 speakers: "This sat sub combination is a steal. The sound is rich, the soundstaging convincing and the bass goes deep....and with the small size of the sat speakers, my wife is reasonably happy too. Hooked up to my Cambridge Audio Electronics for a total of $2k this system sounded almost as good as my $10k system." (Richard Cook, Audioreview.com)
Marc Yun (issue #154, Bound for Sound) had this to say about the Skiffs: “...I can't think of many speakers anywhere near its price or size that can rival (much less best) it in certain areas of reproduction. The upper midrange smoothness and coherence in particular is something to behold... it's surprisingly neutral and capable with a variety of music..." Now imagine combining a pair of Role Audio Skiffs with a pair of EXPs producing quick stereo bass down to the low 20Hzs and you are ready to take on some very expensive esoteric systems.
The Skiff Armada System cannot match the dynamic ability of large monitor-pedestal bass systems such as the Wilson system, but the Wilson system cannot match the Skiff Armada System's finesse, accuracy, musicality and imaging.
